Design Hacks Newsletter

Hey Harry,

At 12:30 Pacific today, I'll be doing a first-ever live Craft Workshop, as well as answering any UX/UI questions 👍

The session is participatory, so show up with comments and suggestions – or just sit back and watch as I go through some detail-oriented design techniques.

[📣 Note: Learn UI Design, Learn UX Design, and Landing Page Academy are open for enrollments through tomorrow night – reply with questions 🎉]

OK, now. Still with me? I want to tell you a story.

If there's one thing that's saved me again and again as a designer – needing to level-up on the fly, trying to break through plateaus – it's analysis.

It sounds dumb, I know 🙈

But I'm a geek. I can't help but get nerdy with these things.

Here's an example: when I was making the Imagery & Photography lesson in Learn UI Design, I noticed a remarkable similarity between two of Dann Petty's Epicurrence designs.

Can you spot it? 👀

What's the same ☝️ and 👇?

In both of these, he uses a texture to mask the background image:

  • In the mountain image, the clouds act as textured mask that transitions the image to a solid background
  • In the surf image, the wave is masked with a watercolor brush, which transitions the image to a solid background

It's so easy to let our eyes pass over this without a moment's notice.

But I'm convinced that by sitting with a design – heck, even copying it pixel-for-pixel – we can learn so many little tips, techniques, and ideas.

And we can apply those to our own work.

This philosophy ofcollect→analyze→utilize is one that I teach all my students in Learn UI Design and Landing Page Academy (also: Learn UX Design, though that's about patterns for usability, not visuals). If you're struggling with making your designs better, I cannot recommend these courses enough.

And also – not to be too on the nose here – but some students can't recommend Learn UI Design enough.

Andrija says it reveals the hidden logic of design decisions (even for an advanced designer):

Milutin says it was the best-spent $1k of his life. Which... dang, I have so many questions, but OK, cool 🙂

Actually, Paulina says the same thing. "Best-spent $900 in my entire career" 🔥

Alexander would've skipped design school if Learn UI Design existed back then:

Anyhow, if you're on the fence about Learn UI Design, hit Reply. I'll be happy to answer any questions 😎

Want your boss to pay for Learn UI Design? Check out this handy guide.

It's time to blow through your design plateaus, and start leveling up. Learn to see the logic behind the design decisions – and then:

  • Design gorgeous UI
  • Brainstorm concepts quicker & with more confidence
  • Receive better design feedback (it's possible 🫢)

There is no course on the market as comprehensive as Learn UI Design for this.

Enroll before tomorrow at midnight. All students have lifetime access to the materials, so the 36+ hours of video lessons, cheatsheets, and best-of links are a resource by your side for the rest of your career 🫡

(And here are links to Landing Page Academy and Learn UX Design if you want – I won't make you scroll for them 🙃)

Best,
Erik D. Kennedy

PS. See you at the Craft Workshop?
