Hi neighbors,

For the last several days, the North Center Senior Center has been closed to allow Catholic Charities to fully take over operations from the City. The Senior Center will reopen to the public this Monday, April 6th, and will feature a similar array of services, including zumba, chair yoga, mahjong, and book club. The Center will also continue providing hot lunches for seniors. If you’re a senior or older adult, stop by soon to meet the new staff and learn about the resources available to you.

The City’s new street sweeping season officially began on Wednesday. The Department of Streets & Sanitation released the sweeping schedule. While I’m thrilled to see street sweeping ramp up, I agree with residents who’d like to see this service expanded in the late Fall months when it’s most needed, and continue to advocate with the Department to make this a reality.

I continue to hear from residents struggling to find a home they can afford or rent or own—a citywide reality recently underscored by a report that found Chicago is short 225,000 rental homes. While there’s no single, quick fix for a problem of this magnitude, one thing we can do is join New York City, Seattle, and Austin in allowing certain new apartment buildings to include a single staircase, which could allow for more rental homes to be built on small or awkward sized lots. I’ve introduced legislation to do just that, and am working with local groups including Abundant Housing Illinois and Strong Towns Chicago to pass it.

Earlier this week, I had a wonderful time meeting with students from Bell Elementary’s Girl Scouts Troop and Lake Forest College. It was a pleasure chatting with them about the challenges and opportunities confronting Chicago and the different types of public service careers that they can pursue.

I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend, and Happy Easter and Chag Pesach Sameach to all those observing.

If you’re looking for something to do, consider swinging by the North Center Hop ‘N’ Stop, as well as the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club’s annual Egg Hunt. And if you’re planning to watch a March Madness game, there’s likely a tavern or restaurant a short walk from you that would be happy to host you!

Yours in service,

Alderman Matt Martin
