| Off the coast of Lanzarote, there is a fully functioning museum 14 metres underwater. | Over 300 life-size sculptures sit on the seabed, and because they're made from pH-neutral concrete, coral and marine life have slowly taken over them. | It's part art installation, part artificial reef, and part fever dream. The gift shop is presumably on land. | What’s in store: | | Read Time: 5 minutes |

| | | AI HEALTH | The 30-second ingredient check: how I use AI to decide what to buy | | If you’ve ever turned a bag or bottle around to check the ingredients - trying to be more mindful, sustainable, or healthy - only to realize you can’t pronounce half of what’s listed, you’re not alone. | Most of the time, there is a better alternative out there. Or at least a way to understand what you’re actually consuming. | The problem is that most of us don’t have time for a full deep dive. | That’s where AI comes in. In about 30 seconds, it can help you decide whether something is fine to buy—or worth swapping out. | Here’s how. | Take a photo of the ingredient list | If you have ChatGPT or Gemini on your phone, all you need to do is snap a pic of: | Food labels Skincare or makeup ingredients Shampoo, sunscreen, baby products Cleaning supplies Supplements
| Ask it, “What’s in this?” or “Is there anything in here that’s really not good for my health?” | Or: “Explain these ingredients in plain English—what each one does, and which (if any) are unnecessary or controversial,” and you’ll quickly see what’s harmless, what actually matters, and what’s just marketing—often revealing that the scariest names are fine, while the friendly ones do nothing at all. | You could also take a pic of the whole chip aisle and ask “Which one of these is likely the healthiest (and, tastiest!) option? | Ask for equivalent swaps (same price, better outcome) | It’s not rocket science; you can accomplish this with a simple prompt, like: “Suggest 2–3 alternatives that are similar in price and use, but with cleaner ingredients or better quality.” | You can narrow it further: | “available at big grocery stores” “drugstore beauty only “safe for sensitive skin” “no essential oils” “no added fragrance” “No artificial dyes, but other ingredients are fine for now”
| Ask if there’s a simple DIY or natural alternative | Let’s say you’re not exactly looking for an alternative, off-brand version of a product, or a healthier version of a snack you like. | This one works especially well for cleaning products and basics. Ask: “Is there a simple, safe DIY alternative for this using common household ingredients? | Get a quick safety + quality rating | You also don’t need an entire essay on why you should/shouldn’t choose this item. | So, try this: “Give this product a simple rating (1–10) for safety and quality for regular use. Explain the score briefly.” | (You can also build a custom ChatGPT where you can ideally save that criteria for the future in order to get quick decisions). | This is great if you just need a quick decision-making sidekick. Essentially, you’re asking: “Is this good enough to buy right now?” | Most of the time, the answer is:“Yes, this is fine” or “This is way overpriced” or “Really not falling within your health goals…” | This should cut through the wellness panic and the greenwashing guilt. | An actual ‘smartcart’ | Before you spiral or start Googling, ask AI to explain the ingredients like you’re five. | Or, whether it’s actually worth buying or if you can find something else. | Most of the time, it’ll tell you what’s fine, what’s overpriced, and if there’s a simpler, cheaper, or more sustainable option, or if you simply don’t have time right now to stress about it. | Screenshot This | Use AI to help you easily analyze ingredients: “Explain these ingredients in plain English.” Ask for healthier, more sustainable, and/or cheaper alternatives of the same product. Decide faster, not perfectly: “Rate this 1–10 for safety and quality for regular use.” Avoid overpaying for “clean” labels: “Is this worth buying at this price?” Find better swaps without changing habits: “Suggest similar alternatives at the same price.” When you’re short on time, outsource the decision: “If this were you, would you buy it?
