| | | CHATGPT | How to Use ChatGPT as a Communication Coach | | Millions of people utilize AI tools like ChatGPT as a personal therapist, a fitness coach, or a job consultant. | But, most of these are one-on-one scenarios. What about using ChatGPT as a mediator to help sort out a conflict with a friend, colleague, or partner? | We tried it! | Start with a fresh account (or without logging in) | This sounds extreme, but it matters. If you try to mediate a conflict inside one of your own accounts, ChatGPT already knows your tone, your preferences, and weeks of context about your life. It will lean towards you, even if it tries not to. | The other person will feel it, and the whole exercise loses credibility before it begins. | Have both parties explain their ‘side’ of the story | Agree out loud, before anyone touches the keyboard, on three things. One, you'll both accept whatever ChatGPT suggests as a starting point for discussion, not a verdict. Two, neither of you will edit or soften the other person's version of events. Three, you'll read the response together, not separately. | A useful structure for each side: | | Explain to ChatGPT how you want it to help you resolve the issue | Now you need to give ChatGPT its role. | You could try: "Act as a couples therapist with 20 years of experience. Read both accounts below. Identify the core issue underneath the surface argument, point out where each person may be misreading the other, and suggest three things we could each do differently."
Or for something punchier: "Act as a blunt friend who isn't afraid to call out bad behaviour on either side. No diplomatic hedging." | The first response is rarely the best one. ChatGPT often opens with something diplomatic and hedged that makes you both feel validated. That's not useful. Ask follow-ups like: | "Which of us is more responsible for this specific issue, and why?" "What's the thing neither of us is saying out loud?" "If this pattern continues for another year, where does it end up?"
| Pro-tip: When you finish the session, ask ChatGPT to summarize the core issue and one thing each person can do differently next time. | Never linger on an issue ever again | ChatGPT won’t lead to world peace. But, for the little disagreements here and there, it can help you see things from a different perspective. | No more scrolling through counselor profiles. Instead, build one yourself. - HL | Screenshot This | Start with a new account for neutrality Have both parties share their side of the story Tell ChatGPT what kind of “coach” you want Use it to reflect, not to “win”
