Hello Market Friends,

The market is officially making the turn toward fall, and we’re excited for what’s ahead!

More apples, pears, squash, pumpkins, and other fall favorites will continue making their way to the market in the coming weeks.

As we welcome the changing season, we also want to give a huge thank-you to Lee’s Edible Acres for an amazing season with us! Their Thursday season has come to an end, so they won’t be at the market for the remainder of the season. We’re grateful for everything they brought to our market and to your tables this year!

But don’t worry—the farm bounty continues! You can still expect plenty of wonderful produce from Global Garden Chicago, Yang Town Farm, Los Rodriguez Farm, and Mick Klug Farms as we head into the heart of fall.

There’s still lots to discover, taste, and take home. Come see what’s in season!

Recipe Box: Giardiniera: Two Ways

If you’re from Chicago, you probably have a pretty specific idea of what giardiniera is.

But did you know our beloved spicy, oily sandwich topping has an Italian cousin that looks—and tastes—quite a bit different?

Traditional Italian giardiniera is all about larger, crisp pieces of vegetables—think cauliflower, carrots, celery, onions, and peppers—in a bright, vinegar-forward brine. It’s traditionally served as an antipasto, condiment, or side dish.

Chicago-style giardiniera takes things in a different direction. The vegetables are finely chopped, there’s considerably more heat and oil, and it has become a signature topping for Italian beef, sausages, sandwiches, and plenty of other Chicago favorites.

So this week, we're giving you two recipes and two ways to get your giardiniera fix!

Traditional Italian Giardiniera

This version keeps things classic with colorful, crunchy vegetables and a tangy, aromatic vinegar brine. It's a great way to preserve some of the late-season garden bounty—and the recipe suggests giving it about a week to develop its full flavor.

Chicago-Style Giardiniera

For the version we know and love around here, turn up the heat! This Chicago-style recipe brings together chopped vegetables, peppers, spices, and plenty of oil for the perfect punchy topping. Put it on an Italian beef, sausage, sandwich—or anything that could use a little Chicago attitude.
