Hello pro-democracy readers! In disturbing news, two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were filmed confronting a poll worker in New York during voting. The state attorney general’s office told Democracy Docket they’re looking into it.

Also: If you missed our breaking news email earlier today, there was a big win in court in which a judge blocked agencies from implementing President Donald Trump’s sweeping attack on mail voting. Read more about the big pro-voting win below.

All that and more is on the docket today. See you tomorrow!

ICE agents filmed confronting a poll worker in New York

  • In the video, the agents can be seen confronting the Syracuse, New York poll worker about her social media posts at a voting site while she was helping carry out the state’s recent primary elections.

  • New York Attorney General Letitia James’ (D) office told Democracy Docket it’s reviewing a report on the alarming incident, which raises the specter of federal agents interfering in active elections.

  • Far-right figures have called on Trump to deploy agents to polling places during the midterm elections as part of a clear effort to intimidate voters and election workers.

Court delivers big win against Trump’s order attacking mail voting

  • If you missed our breaking news email earlier today: A federal judge blocked federal agencies from implementing Trump’s sweeping attack on mail voting and his attempt to create a national voter registration list before the midterm elections in 23 Democratic states and Washington, D.C.

  • The 37-page ruling marks a major win for voters before the midterms. It halts the U.S. Postal Service from refusing to deliver mail ballots unless states hand over their voter lists to the Trump administration.

  • It’s the latest in a string of important rulings this week against Trump’s anti-voting agenda. Are the courts stepping up to protect the midterms?

➤ Why this is such a big win

Pro-voting group sues Trump DOJ over its alleged voter purge lists

  • The Brennan Center for Justice sued the Trump administration today, seeking records on whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) has created lists of voters for states to remove from the rolls.

  • It’s a new transparency fight over the administration’s nationwide campaign to seize sensitive voter data ahead of the midterms.

Trump told us exactly what he did

  • When Trump told a crowd that he asked the DOJ to “do me a favor” and probe California elections, it was a blatant abuse of executive power “to achieve a partisan political objective,” Marc writes in his newest op-ed.

‘Significant burden’: Ohio governor vetoes GOP-backed mail voting restrictions

  • Gov. Mike DeWine (R) nixed the bill because it "would create an additional and significant burden for Ohioans." Voting advocates had warned the legislation would also create privacy concerns.

ICYMI: Court upholds map targeting Mississippi Black voters

  • A federal judge upheld DeSoto County, Mississippi’s local election maps, which Black voters argued were drawn to suppress their political power.

Trump's plan A to rig elections is failing in court. Plan B is much worse

  • Marc joins Nicolle Wallace's “Deadline: White House” to break down Trump's scheme to control who gets to vote in the 2026 midterms.

Here we share noteworthy briefs on all things voting rights and democracy. Have a footnote for us? Send it to newsletters@democracydocket.com

  • Elon Musk will need to answer questions under oath — despite his attempts to avoid testifying — regarding lawsuits that accused him of misleading voters in swing states when he promised $1 million giveaways ahead of the 2024 election.

  • Another day, another bit of national reflecting pool drama. Officials in D.C. are investigating why several ducks have been found dead in the pool. Also, National Park officials won’t corroborate Trump’s claim of a 350-foot “gash” being found there.

  • There was a win today highlighting the importance of state-level voting rights acts. Pro-voters brought a lawsuit challenging Huntington Beach, California’s method for electing city council members. The court found the method violated the California Voting Rights Act and ordered ranked-choice voting. Specifically, the California Supreme Court found the case was not affected by the U.S. Supreme Court’s gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 decision.

  • Tired of having the burden of electing senators be part of your voting process? Would you rather have someone else do it for you? (Please note my heavy sarcasm here). Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) introduced a joint resolution today that would repeal the 17th Amendment and “revive federalism” by having senators be elected by state legislatures.

  • Oddly, the normal “voter fraud” folks aren’t crying foul as Utah counts its votes. Strange how that works, huh?
