I have been practicing law for more than 30 years. I built my career helping Democrats win elections and fighting for the rights of all citizens to vote in free and fair elections.

In that time, I have seen my fair share of right-wing attacks on the right to vote. Republican legislatures have erected targeted barriers aimed at disenfranchising voters they want to fence out of the political process. They have moved up voter registration deadlines, made it harder to vote by mail and limited the hours you can cast your ballot on Election Day.

I have litigated hundreds of cases and I have a pretty good track record to show for it. After the 2020 election, I helped lead the legacy team that defeated Donald Trump and his allies more than 60 times in court.

Very little surprises me. Yet, in the last few weeks, Republicans were still able to shock me.

Never have I witnessed the extreme levels of unabashed, unashamed callousness that has overtaken the GOP in the wake of Callais — the Supreme Court case that gutted the Voting Rights Act. Republican lawmakers are carving up majority-Black districts with the kind of feverish joy often seen in right-wing mobs. The masks are off — if they were ever even on to begin with.

In Louisiana, Gov. Jeff Landry cancelled an ongoing primary election so that the legislature could draw a new map that eliminates a majority-Black district. In Tennessee, lawmakers raced to break apart the Memphis-based 9th Congressional District. And in Missouri, the state Supreme Court didn’t waste any time — ruling that the state’s gerrymandered map could prevail less than six hours after oral arguments.

As crazy as it sounds, this is only a small fraction of the redistricting special sessions and litigation taking place across the country. It is a lot to take in, and exhausting at times to comprehend the battles we are fighting every day.

I founded Democracy Docket for moments like this. I am proud of the work that Democracy Docket is doing. Its team of 30 is covering every lawsuit, every hearing and every Republican gerrymander. Its reporters have written and published over 80 articles since the Callais decision came down on April 29 — less than three weeks ago.

Marc will never back down when it comes to defending free and fair elections, and neither will we. Support Democracy Docket’s mission to always shine a light on the truth.

JOIN THE FIGHT

These are not simple fluff pieces or stories that simply regurgitate what others have reported. Democracy Docket is breaking news and offering deeply reported stories and analysis.

Just as importantly, Democracy Docket is not softening the news to make it more palatable. While legacy outlets like the Washington Post report that Louisiana “moves to redraw Black House district,” our headlines don’t hide the truth. We let our readers know that Louisiana is erasing a majority-Black district.

That’s because, unlike the legacy media, Democracy Docket isn’t beholden to corporate shareholders, venture capitalists or private equity investors. It is fearlessly independent and unapologetically pro-democracy. It will never back down, and it will never obey.

The 80-plus stories it posted over the last three weeks speaks to the passion and commitment to covering democracy and free and fair elections that our readers deserve.

While our reporters were hard at work, so were our researchers, who contributed to these stories and diligently updated our case page — where you can find information on the lawsuits behind many of these stories. Meanwhile, our growing video team has been producing content on YouTube, and our social team unpacked these updates for you on every platform.

None of this work is easy. In fact, it is hard. But I founded Democracy Docket to help you make sense of attacks on democracy.

That’s where you come in. As a subscriber to Democracy Docket, you’re part of this team, too, and I ask that you tell your friends and family to subscribe and join us.

I am deeply grateful for your continued support, and if you are able to, please consider becoming a premium member. Your membership helps keep the Democracy Docket machine running, and allows the team to do the hard, important work it has done over the last three weeks and the last six years.

If you’re not able to become a premium member, I understand. As always, thank you for being a subscriber and reader. But if you do upgrade, I deeply appreciate it.

I am always proud of the Democracy Docket team — but as I sat down to write this, I was deeply impressed with the work they accomplished, and grateful that our team is putting this critical information out there. Where the legacy media has fallen short, the Democracy Docket team has stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park.

We can’t do that without you, so please know that you are a crucial part of our team. Thank you.

Democracy Docket will always report the truth about what's happening to our democracy. As legacy media continues to cower to Trump, we aren't afraid and won't pull punches. Power this kind of reporting that will always speak up.
