Friend,
Almost 250 years ago, a group of people had a bold and brave idea. They set out on a journey to create a new country, free from divine monarchy and theocracy. A country of the people, by the people, and for the people. For 250 years, we have been marching toward the promise of America as a country where all people can be free.
As the United States quickly approaches this 250th anniversary, Christian Nationalists are hard at work spreading disinformation about religious freedom and the role religion played in our nation's founding.
So it's a good moment to ask: How well do we really understand our founding, and the role that church-state separation played in it?
👉 Take our quiz to test your knowledge about religious freedom, church-state separation, and ongoing threats from Christian Nationalists and see how you do.
This quiz cuts through common myths and highlights the principles that still shape our democracy today. From the meaning of the Declaration of Independence to the origins of religious freedom, these questions get at something bigger: whether we’ll uphold the founding ideal that government must stay independent from religion to protect everyone’s rights.
Want to go further? We also invite you to host your own “America at 250” trivia night with friends, your congregation, or your community. It’s a simple way to spark conversation about why church-state separation still matters—and why we’re working every day to defend it. At Americans United, we believe true religious freedom means the right to live as yourself and believe as you choose, as long as you don’t harm others. And that right depends on upholding church-state separation.
