These Times Demand Bold Ideas. Support The Nation. Donate Now.

Dear Friend of The Nation,

As I recently wrote in The Nation, I am sick and tired of Democrats conceding that the only answer for various racist laws—Jim Crow redistricting, onerous voter ID, now a GOP-dominated state Supreme Court overturning the will of Virginia’s voters—is that Democrats just have to vote more and harder and better.

We are in a war for democracy and a lot of once-unthinkable ideas are being thought. The Nation is where this crucial thinking happens.

It’s the magazine where Sen. Bernie Sanders sets forward his vision on AI, Elie Mystal proposes a plan for a national, coordinated response to Trump’s efforts to rig the midterms, Zephyr Teachout charts a revival of democratic and decentralized media ownership, and Gregg Gonsalves envisions the de-Trumpification of our public health infrastructure.

To put it simply, The Nation is where exceptional writers, visionary elected officials and movement leaders, and bold ideas speak to the rapidly growing progressive movement building power all across the country.

This month, we’re raising $20,000 to support The Nation’s journalism as we sprint to the November midterm elections. We need these resources to ensure that our writers, editors, and fact checkers can bring you the critical stories from the races that will shape the future of our country. Please, if you can, donate today.

It’s not even July yet, and we’ve already seen outsider progressives, like current Minnesota Lieutenant Governor and Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan and New Jersey congressional candidate Dr. Adam Hamawy, make major waves within the party.

I had the chance to profile Flanagan, who just won the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party nomination for the seat and would be the country’s first Native woman to be elected to the Senate, for The Nation’s June cover story. When I sat down with her, I found the kind of fighter that this country needs right now.

“I want to avenge Minnesota!” she told me, raising her voice. “You don’t get to just leave; you have to repair this. The love, the solidarity here has been great, but you don’t just get to do this to us. God willing, when we get power back, everything they’ve done has to be undone. Everybody has to be prosecuted.”

Whether it’s profiles like these or The Nation’s early endorsement of now NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, we are bringing inspiring local leaders to national attention and shaping the conversation around the progressive surge.

All this is possible because we’re powered by readers who care just as much about our country as we do. I hope you’ll support this crucial work with a donation today.
