Pride Month is a celebration of joy, identity, and community. It’s also a reminder that we must defend LGBTQ+ rights against those trying to force their religious beliefs on us all.
That’s why American United’s mission to protect church-state separation has everything to do with LGBTQ+ rights.
Christian Nationalists are pushing anti-LGBTQ+ policies in schools, legislatures, and inside our federal government because they see support for LGBTQ+ rights as an affront to their narrow religious views of gender. We’re seeing it everywhere:
Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, legally justified with claims of 'religious freedom'.
Book bans and classroom censorship targeting LGBTQ+ students and families.
Efforts to ban trans people from public spaces and deny gender-affirming care.
These attacks are part of a broader Christian Nationalist movement that wants to use the government to impose one narrow religious worldview on everyone else.
Want to dig deeper into how church-state separation protects LGBTQ+ freedom? These pieces from AU break it down:
At Americans United, we believe religious freedom means that every person has the right to live as themselves, without someone else's religion controlling their bodies or rights.
That's why AU is fighting back in courtrooms and communities nationwide, and why we're fighting for LGBTQ+ communities not just during Pride Month, but every month.
