Main Street Improvements Kick Off this Week
|
Improvements from Crawford to Karlov Avenues will include new hardscape materials, planters and landscaping, site furnishings, lighting, improved pedestrian walkways, curb extensions and enhanced crosswalks, as well as space for gateway and public art elements. Together, the improvements will help create a safer, more welcoming and better connected corridor that supports Main Street businesses and the surrounding neighborhood.
Zoom out: The project advances the Village’s Community Vibrancy strategic goal, which includes expanding economic development efforts and exploring opportunities for improvements with every infrastructure project.

Before streetscape work began, Skokie Public Works contracted replacement of lead water services within the project area, coordinating needed infrastructure work with the larger Main Street improvement project.
With that work complete, streetscape construction will proceed in two phases:

September through December: South side of Main Street, between Karlov and Keystone Avenues
- February through May: North side of Main Street, between Keystone and Crawford Avenues

This week, Copenhaver Construction, the contractor handling the streetscape improvements, will begin marking construction limits on the south side of Main Street. Next week, crews will begin removing the existing sidewalk on that block. Visitors can expect some noise and dust during demolition.

Copenhaver will keep a walkway with ramps to every business entrance throughout the project, including during demolition. On-street parking along Main Street will be preserved whenever and wherever possible, and side street parking will continue to be available.
Construction is temporary, but your favorite Main Street businesses need your support throughout the project. Stop in for a sandwich, grab a coffee or gelato, or do some shopping. A little extra business goes a long way while these blocks get a makeover.

Join Your Neighborhood Beat Meeting this October
|
The Skokie Police Department holds quarterly meetings in each of its nine geographic patrol areas – called “beats.” Join us for a beat meeting this October to meet the officers who patrol your neighborhood!
What to expect: Each beat has a permanent officer assigned to it, and Crime Prevention officers also attend. The meetings give residents and local groups a chance to talk with the officers who work in their area, share concerns, and work together to address neighborhood issues.
Who should attend: Everyone is welcome—residents, business owners, schools, religious groups, and neighborhood organizations.

What to expect: Learn practical ways to put AI tools to work for your career, from conducting smarter research and mastering prompt design to building stronger resumes. Register in advance for this free event.

Two Ways to Give Back at the Farmers’ Market

This Sunday, September 27, you can pick up farm-fresh produce and give back to the community at the Skokie Farmers’ Market!

Non-perishable food: The Village’s Commission on Family Services will collect non-perishable food items for the Niles Township Food Pantry, which serves local families in need.
- Halloween costumes: Help make Halloween special for Skokie kids by donating new or gently used costumes. Please label them with the size.

Drop-off: Bring donations to the green Skokie Farmers’ Market tent on the Oakton Street side of the market.

Gardening for a Reason, October 1

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the Village’s Beautification and Improvement Commission is done helping you improve your garden!
The Commission invites you to a free, informative lecture hosted by Skokie Public Library on Thursday, October 1: “Gardening for a Reason: How Your Yard Can Contribute to Local Biodiversity.” Learn about two programs to help you create and support biodiversity right here in our community.
