Hey ,

The "man-on-the-street interview" style ads had a big moment, but have become a little overused and less effective.

But this format just brought it back...

This one is from Maytag (not a client).

It looks like your typical man-on-the-street spot. Mic in hand. Asking seemingly random people questions on the corner.

But instead of pretending it’s a real convo, they dubbed over every single response with their own voiceover. It's clearly intentional and it’s hilarious.

The question posed to the group is "What does May is Maytag month mean to you?" (why would anybody have an opinion on this??)

And the fake voiceover is making them say things like:

“It's everything to me.”
“I love Maytag appliances so much it hurts”
"I'm gonna get a washer, a dryer and a new range."

It’s all absurd. And that’s the point.

It’s a fun twist on a format that can easily feel forced or fake. By owning the dubbing, they made it silly but also build a little more affection for the brand then you had before watching.

If a format is played out, flip it. Add some humor. Call out the obvious. Sometimes making it less real makes it better.
