Devil Dawgs Zoning Change Request Passes City Council
Devil Dawgs' zoning change request for 5255 N Clark passed City Council this month! The zoning change from B1-2 to B3-2 allows for a physical bar/counter with seating within the restaurant. B3-2 zoning currently exists in Andersonville on both the east and west sides of Clark.
This zoning change request went through our community engagement process in the early summer of last year and after reviewing all feedback, Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth approved this request. It was supported by East Andersonville Residents Council (EARC) and the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. This request was also reviewed by the 48th Ward Zoning Advisory Council. Note: Devil Dawgs previously had a joint venture with Bar Demijohn (a Heisler Hospitality cocktail establishment) for this zoning change request. The joint venture changed so that Devil Dawgs opened on its own at 5255 N Clark.

This week, Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth helped to secure a Community Development Grant of $205,556 for Miss Ollie’s Market at 1070 W Berwyn. This is part of our office’s efforts to support 48th Ward small businesses and revitalize Berwyn, which has struggled in recent years. Revitalization efforts along Berwyn include the new fully-accessible Berwyn CTA Red Line Station, over $3.8 million in support for Steep Theatre, the new Berwyn Greenway connecting the North Branch Trail to the Lakefront Trail, restoration of the beautiful 5252 N Broadway and conversion into new family-sized apartments, and 56 new homes at 1101 W Berwyn. We are looking forward to the ribbon cutting at Miss Ollie’s Market soon!

MWRD TARP System Updates
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has been working around the clock to capture billions of gallons of stormwater that have fallen across Cook County during recent storm events. Due to recent rain events, the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) systems are holding nearly 9 billion gallons of stormwater, which is enough water to fill 13,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools! As of Monday, there have been no combined sewer overflows in Chicago.
Please note, street flooding can still occur even when there is plenty of room in TARP. If small neighborhood sewers don’t have the capacity to carry water to the MWRD’s intercepting sewers or TARP tunnels, they may back up. Often, water pooling temporarily in streets is by design, to slow the flow of water through the TARP system.
We can all play a part in supporting the city's TARP system and avoiding sewer overflows by simply reducing our water use on days when the sewer system is already strained. Sign up for Overflow Action Day alerts from MWRD for reminders to conserve water during heavy rainfall.

DFSS Rental Assistance Program
The Rental Assistance Program (RAP) provides funding to Chicagoans who are at risk of becoming homeless. RAP helps Chicagoans who have housing right now, but who may become homeless soon because they are experiencing a temporary loss or reduction in income that makes it difficult to pay rent. This program is intended to provide short-term support while promoting long-term housing stability. Visit the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) site to learn more and check your eligibility.

Elise Malary Plaza Construction Update
Construction is underway on Andersonville’s first pedestrian plaza! Catalpa between Clark and Ashland is now closed to through traffic as planned. Pedestrian safety is being monitored at the Clark Street crosswalk, and barricades are in place. Please know that moving or altering construction traffic-control signs in Chicago is a violation of municipal code and subject to fines up to $500.
CDOT will continue to monitor the area and work with the contractor to maintain a safe pedestrian route. The contractor has also been instructed not to park vehicles on Clark Street to help minimize impacts to traffic and to maintain visibility. Pavement removal and earth excavation activities are planned on Catalpa within the project area starting next week. These operations are expected to have only minimal impacts on traffic on Clark and Ashland.
