SNAP & FOOD SECURITY RESOURCES
|
|
Dear 48th Ward Neighbors,
Due to a government shutdown at the federal level, SNAP funds are being withheld from tens of thousands of Chicagoans who rely on them to buy groceries. At the same time, new SNAP eligibility and work requirements will go into effect on December 1, causing many people and families to lose their benefits altogether. In the 48th ward, we believe that no one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from, so we’re collaborating with city departments, community organizations, and our neighbors to build a network of support.
- For food assistance in the 48th ward, including groceries and hot meals, see our SNAP & Food Security Resource Guide.
- For those able, consider donating your time and resources to help ensure no one in our community goes hungry. Organizations providing food assistance in the 48th ward include Care for Real, Care for Friends, Vivent Health, Groceryland, and Edgewater Mutual Aid.
- For work or volunteer opportunities in order to meet the new SNAP eligibility requirements, visit the American Job Center at Truman or one of the many non-profits in our community that are seeking volunteers including Care for Real, Care for Friends, Chinese Mutual Aid Association, SEAC, Centro Romero, Nourishing Hope, Groceryland, and the 48th Ward Office.
I will continue advocating for investments in our social safety nets—including SNAP—and pushing back against policies that hurt our most vulnerable neighbors.
I am proud to live in the 48th ward where we rise to the occasion to support each other. Please continue caring for one another and reaching out to my office for resources and support.
Yours in Community,
|
|
Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth
48th Ward Alderwoman

One of the changes coming to SNAP eligibility is an 80 hr per month work/volunteer requirement for most adults ages 18-64. We recently partnered with Care for Friends to provide a training on how to establish a volunteer program to help SNAP recipients meet this requirement.
If you are an organization looking to host volunteer opportunities for SNAP recipients, see the toolkit here. If you would like to add your organization to a list of places accepting volunteers, email comms@the48thward.org.
If you are looking for volunteer opportunities in the 48th Ward in order to meet SNAP eligibility requirements, there are a number of fantastic organizations seeking volunteers including CMAA, Centro Romero, Care for Real, Care for Friends, Edgewater Mutual Aid, the 48th Ward Office, and more. Secretary Giannoulias' Plate Watch Hotline
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias issued a stern warning to federal ICE agents that swapping or altering license plates is illegal and will not be tolerated in Illinois. The warning comes amid reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are flipping and modifying state-issued license plates on vehicles. In a video circulating on social media, an ICE agent is recorded telling a bystander filming their vehicle’s license plate that: “You can record all you want. We change the plates out every day.” To report plate violations, call the Secretary of State’s Plate Watch Hotline at (312) 814-1730 or email platewatch@ilsos.gov. Read the full press release here.

Chicago Heat Ordinance Reminder
The Chicago Heat Ordinance mandates that landlords supply heat to any unit in which residents do not have individual control of the thermostat during cold weather months. From September 15 - June 1, the temperature inside a rental residence is required to be at least 68 degrees from 8:30am - 10:30pm and at least 66 degrees from 10:30pm - 8:30am. Landlords face fines of up to $1000 per day, per violation, for each day they do not supply adequate heat. Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Affordable Housing Update
The 48th Ward has several Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) buildings. These SROs are an essential type of low-income rental housing for neighbors who cannot afford or do not qualify for traditional market-rate or affordable housing. Many of these neighbors are often one step away from homelessness.
We're doing everything we can to help our at-risk neighbors stay housed without having to leave their North Side communities that they've called home for so long, including
- Holding owners accountable to building conditions,
- Strengthening the SRO Preservation Ordinance, and
- Working closely with community organizations that advocate for SRO residents.
Read more on our blog.
