This week’s review has the most important stats from Sunday, three takeaways from the week, and the leaderboards. Let’s get to it.
The Sunday Stat Scroll
Here are some of our favorite stats from Sunday.
The Steelers held the Saints to the lowest yards per designed rush in a game since 2021 (minimum 15 rushes).
After putting up 120 yards in the 1st half on Sunday, Zay Flowers now has the most 110+ receiving yard 1st halves in a single season (3) since at least 2016.
Joe Burrow went 16/18 for 249 and 4 touchdowns in the 2nd half against the Ravens. His Total EPA in the 2nd half was the 4th best in a 2nd half across 2,204 qualifiers since 2022.
The Miami Dolphins produced their highest EPA/dropback in a game over the last two years on Sunday. The Dolphins-Jets game produced the highest combined EPA/play for an AFC East matchup since 2022.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held Bryce Young to the 2nd worst EPA/dropback of his entire career.
KC Concepcion produced a 98th percentile yards per route run in a win over the Titans.
Jaylen Warren is the first running back to have 550+ rushing yards and 250+ receiving yards over the first seven games of a season since Christian McCaffrey in 2019.
JJ McCarthy produced his highest passing yard and completion percentage totals in a single game in his entire career on Sunday against the Texans.
Three Takeaways
Detroit Lions 20, Green Bay Packers 17: The Lions squeezed out a close division win.
The Lions offense was very productive passing on early downs against the Packers. They went 18/24 for 288 yards, 0.65 EPA/dropback, and a 64% success rate on early downs as Jared Goff ripped throws over the middle of the field. On late downs, though, the Lions produced -0.93 EPA/dropback.
The Green Bay Packers defense was able to contact Jahmyr Gibbs on 23 out of 29 runs. Still, Gibbs managed to produce 112 yards after contact.
Jordan Love went 1/7 for 20 yards and a sack against eight blitzes from the Lions. Six of those eight blitzes produced a pressure as Detroit stressed Green Bay’s offensive line.
The Giants and Browns are two surprising division leaders.
The Giants added to their lead in the NFC East with a 27-21 win over the Texans in overtime. JJ McCarthy was 7/12 for 196 yards on throws 10+ air yards down the field and hit multiple high difficulty completions.
The offense has taken a heavy personnel approach this season and used 22 personnel a bunch on Sunday. The Giants had a 68.4% success rate and 157 yards on 19 carries out of 22. They had runs of 42 yards and 30 yards in overtime to complete the big upset.
The Browns sit atop the AFC North with a tiebreaker over the Pittsburgh Steelers. They are 5-2 with multiple close wins including a 27-24 win over the Titans in Week 7.
Deshaun Watson ranks 24th/38 in EPA/play this season but ranks 1st/38 in EPA/play in the last two minutes of each half. He has led five fourth quarter game-winning drives through Week 7 including seven conversions on eight 3rd downs.
KC Concepcion continued his strong rookie season with a 28.6% target share and 4.61 yards per route run in Week 7.
Seattle Seahawks 20, Kansas City Chiefs 3: The Seattle Seahawks defense is an absolute black hole.
The Kansas City Chiefs entered this week with the 4th best offense by EPA/play supported by a phenomenal start to the season from Kenneth Walker. The Seattle Seahawks defense entered this week 2nd in EPA/play allowed.
The Seahawks defense won this battle definitively as Walker managed zero explosive runs and his longest rush was just seven yards. Seattle pressured Mahomes on more than 50% of snaps and slammed the door shut in the 4th quarter.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba continues to defy logic as he put up 150 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. Smith-Njigba was able to win in tight window situations up the sideline on vertical routes and could easily create space on slants. He is now up to 867 receiving yards, eight touchdowns, and 3.72 yards per route run.
JSN can run every route, he can catch every ball, and he isn’t afraid of double coverage. If he is able to continue his production, we hope voter fatigue doesn’t prevent him from winning a second consecutive Offensive Player of the Year.
The Leaderboards
Joe Burrow went 10/13 for 138 yards when under pressure against the Ravens. He was only sacked once on 14 pressured dropbacks.
Malik Willis went 9/11 for 144 yards and zero sacks against the blitz against the Jets.
Tee Higgins finished with six catches for 148 yards despite having no catches in the first half.
Omar Cooper Jr. caught all five of his targets for 115 yards including three big receptions on third downs.
Bucky Irving was consistent against the Panthers with 16 successful rushes on 24 carries.
Before today, the Giants didn’t have a single running back rush go for 20+ yards. That ended in overtime on Sunday when Cam Skattebo broke off a 42-yard rush.
