A message from ChiTownBio President, Andy Scarpelli:


With a particularly wet and cold spring damaging crops, record heat to begin July threatening lives, and recent horrendous air quality trapping us inside, the effects that humans are having on the environment are being laid bare. For this very reason and so many more, ChiTownBio is excited to be partnering with organizations like Chicago Climate Week and others to reaffirm our commitment to the fight for a healthy, safe, and equitable future based on scientific understanding and technological progress. We believe that understanding the principals of the biological and chemical cycles around us as well as investment and development of green technologies can make an essential difference, and whose purpose is a more verdant future for all Chicagoans.

Adjusted Lab Hours This Week

Saturday's (7/25) lab hours will be 11-3:45. Regular Saturday hours will resume the following week. Please reach out to andy@chitownbio.org if you need to make alternate arrangements!

Chicago Climate Week

The lab hosted a molecular ecology workshop yesterday, and it was a great time! Participants made alginate string, dyed cloths with hibiscus tea, observed pineapple fibers under the microscope, and decorated our windows with seaweed jellies. Everyone left with a recyclable baggie filled with string and knowledge of ecologically friendly materials.


Chicago Climate Week's culminating event, Marketplace of the Future, is Saturday at mHub (1623 W. Fulton St.). ChiTownBio is hosting a panel discussion at 5 PM titled Growing Climate Solutions: How Biology Is Shaping a More Sustainable Future. Please come support the lab!

The Fermenter is Coming to the South Side!

We will be bringing the Biotech Fermenter to Hyde Park! The UChicago Science Incubator provides early-stage life sciences, quantum, clean energy, and data science companies with access to state-of-the-art facilities and amenities, cutting-edge wet lab space and equipment, and seasoned management expertise necessary to flourish. The Incubator is home to a number of biotech startups and labratories, so this is a great opportunity to connect with companies you may not have heard of before and to tour a truly innovative facility.
